It would be an understatement to say that the T3 tailwheel suspension system is proving itself to be a dramatic improvement over the factory leaf-spring. The original setup has often been prone to shimmy and other problems and provides minimal suspension value, especially on rougher fields. Several of us have replaced the springs with the new T3 suspension and the results are dramatic.
This article is intended to provide some information about options for mounting the new setup and some thoughts about the process. Please note that while I have a lot of positive feedback to report on this mod, I do not work for Supercubs North or T3 or Dan Dufault, and I have no stake in this other than to give the rest of you info on my experience. The original tailwheel mounting on the GlaStars and most Sportsman used two brackets to contain and support the springs.
The T3 suspension can be installed using either of these earlier arrangements. In every case, you should be able to use your original tailwheel probably Alaska Bushwheel? Whichever setup you plan to use, it affects only the aft mounting point. The forward mount uses the same bracket and bolt as either factory setup.
Each of the three different aft mounting setups will include a lateral bolt that passes through the T3 suspension frame. If you have the old two-bracket system or the two-bolt system, and you choose to keep your setup, you will need to get with Dan to order the correct configuration and make sure the dimensions are correct for your airplane.
In my case, I had the old brackets and wanted to get rid of them in any case. Most of the information below will focus on that setup. If you are going to convert from one of the other mount setups, just fill the old holes and drill the new ones. When I got mine, the holes in the wings were not drilled, but I think the new ones may be pre-drilled. Also, the curvature in the saddle on mine required a great deal of sanding to get it to mate with the fuselage, to center the tailwheel with the exact center of the airplane, and to ensure that the tailwheel suspension is perfectly vertical.
Once again, I think future production pieces will be much better fitted and require far less adjustment on the spindle sander. To that end, when I reshaped my saddle, I made sure the T3 block and therefore the T3 suspension would be perfectly centered on the fuselage and that the sides of the T3 suspension are perfectly vertical.

Air volume is easily tunable via air volume spacers that can be removed or installed in a matter of minutes. Unmatched small bump compliance and damping is achieved from a bladder and loader style compression unit.
Cooling fins on the reservoir allow heat to effectively dissipate from the shock keeping temperatures low and damping consistent. The T3 Compression adjust gives you three compression settings for pedaling, traversing, and descending. The new Topaz allows you to tune the volume in both the positive and negative side to achieve a more progressive or linear feel.
This is done with the provided tuning bands that come with your DVO Topaz. The tuning bands can be installed in the shock in a matter of minutes and in some cases without having to remove the shock from the bike. The shock will retain compression and rebound damping for a longer amount of time offering ultimate performance on the roughest terrain. Open for rough descents, mid for added support, and closed for the firmest compression. Bladders are located in the reservoir of the rear shock and take the place of a traditional IFP or internal floating piston. They both have the same purpose but completely different ways of executing it.
That purpose is to seperate the air from the oil. A bladder is basically a ballon which is filled with air and seated to the end cap. The bladder is filled with a high PSI to push back against the oil which creates pressure in the system. As the shock is compressed, oil flows through the the system and starts to compress the bladder. When the shock goes to extend again, the bladder pushes the oil back in the opposite direction.
Cavitation is when there is a gap in the oil caused from air bubbles and creates a temporary loss of damping. Picture turning on a hose, what happens as the water is pushing the air out of the line? Water intermittently shoots out in between gaps of air. This same situation happens in suspension causing a loss of damping. As the shock is compressing and rebounding at a high velocity, it can sometimes have a difficult time changing directions.
An IFP usually has a moment of hesitation in that situation due to stiction between the outer O-ring and the inside surface of the reservoir. Every detail matters. The exterior of the shock is machined and forged with the highest quality materials available, giving the shock a brilliant and durable finish.

The suspension system in the Vanagon is fairly simple and designed to be extremely reliable. However, over time, bushings and CV joints need replacing. In a 25 year old plus vehicle, the time is probably sooner than later that these components will need replacing.

Over time, CV joints and CV boots can wear badly causing clicking while turning or even driving in a straight line in the worst cases.
