Not bad, this should probably make it's way into some cheaper phones, and offer decent image quality for the entry-level I guess. Hopefully they can make that in an APS-C size sensor and put it in the a successor, now that would be interesting. Not sure if any of the lenses would support 48MP of resolution though. It makes me wonder how the tiny cheap lens in the camera supports 48MP of resolution.
I'd like to see some full size images once it is released. If they look like all other cell phone pictures, they will probably look like crap. I don't see the sensor tech getting THAT much better in the next years. You still can use FF Sony lenses on their apsc. Rumors say f1. There have been articles written about it. Sensor size names are weird. It's actually 12mm diagonal 9. Some phone-camera sensors are getting bigger, but the harder size limitation is the lenses; they seem stuck at under 8mm diameter and 10mm focal length, which fundamentally limits low light performance and telephoto reach.
These large phone sensors are generally paired with wide-angle lenses. I'm fine with not knowing the actual physical measurement. It makes no difference to me as long as the different sizes are linearly comparable. Again, just make it consistent at least.
Between this and the Samsung ISOcell, this should be a good year for smartphone cameras. A couple of years ago the armchair engineers around here were claiming that there could never be a large sensor smartphone because "physics" and here we are with two near 1" options. These days, the competition in the mobile image sensor market consists mostly of Sony and Samsung, but there is another player in the market: OmniVision. While their products have had few design wins over the last few years, it has tried to make itself more relevant by announcing a new flagship 48MP image sensor for high-end phones in the form of the OmniVision OV48C.
This makes it atypically large as all the other 48MP image sensors have a 0. The higher pixel size is because the sensor is physically bigger. OmniVision states that this enables high resolution and excellent low light performance for flagship smartphone cameras.
